On Thursday, June 25, 2020, the National Institute hosted a virtual forum on the current and future effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on higher education. National Institute President Fred Larsen was joined by three dynamic leaders in higher education for a wide ranging discussion of the challenges and opportunities facing colleges and universities in America.

Dear Trustees, Members, and Friends of the National Institute —

By now, I have no doubt that all of you are well aware that the world is under a serious pandemic attack by the novel coronavirus know as COVID-19. I have no wish to clog your communications with yet another message of solidarity, no matter how useful or welcome, but I did want to share with each of you with a few important messages.

AHA Awards Inaugural NISS Travel Grants

This year, the National Institute of Social Sciences is partnering with the American Historical Association to support graduate students participating at the AHA’s annual meeting. The “National Institute of Social Sciences Annual Meeting Travel Grants” provide modest grants to defray expenses incurred by graduate students who are presenting papers or making presentations.

NISS Partners with American Historical Association to Support Graduate Students

The National Institute of Social Sciences has partnered with the American Historical Association to support graduate students attending the AHA’s annual meetings, which take place each January.

The first grants will be awarded to support students at the AHA’s 2020 annual meeting, which will be held in New York City from January 3-6.

Living Landmarks to Honor Barbara and Donald Tober

Barbara and Donald Tober are among those being honored on Wednesday, November 6 at the 2019 Living Landmarks Celebration at The Plaza in New York. Both Mr. and Mrs. Tober are devoted New Yorkers, and noted philanthropists supporting various New York cultural institutions. Mrs. Tober is chair emerita of the Museum of Arts and Design while Mr. Tober is chair of the Sugar Foods Corporation.

Joan Davidson to be Honored by Walkway Over the Hudson

Joan K. Davidson, a vice president of the NISS Board of Trustees, will be honored at the Walkway Over the Hudson’s 2019 Starry Starry Night celebration on Friday, October 4. Mrs. Davidson is the president of Furthermore Press, a past president of the J.M. Kaplan Fund, a past commissioner of New York State Parks, and past chair of the New York State Quadricentennial Commission.
